The Israeli Special Forces is known as Sayeret Matkal and is a unit of the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF. They have a variety of missions, although the size of the special forces in Israel is classified.

Their History

Sayeret Matkal began in 1957 and was modeled after the SAS. They have been involved in a number of different engagements over the years and their headquarters are now at Sirkin Camp.

How To Become A Member Of Sayeret Matkal

When Sayeret Matkal first began, it was a top secret unit. It is still very covert, although those who want to be part of this Special Forces team are recommended by those who are in the IDF. Those who are serving in the military in Israel, which has compulsory service, are eligible to be recruited as members of this special forces team.

Sayeret Matkal Training

Recruits are given four months of basic training, two months of infantry training, three weeks of parachuting training and five weeks of counter terror training. The rest of the training is long range training and consists of various exercises. Although there is an insignia for this special forces team, it is not allowed to be worn in public.

What Are They Best At?

They are best at reconnaissance, direct action, raids, hostage rescues and counter terrorism tactics.

The weapons are classified, although as the Special forces unit has been modeled after the British SAS, it can be assumed that weaponry is similar.

Known Missions

There have been various engagements involving hostage and terrorist situations. Some of the most well known missions include the Six Day War, War of Attrittiron, 1973 raid on Lebanon, Yom Kippur War, Operation Entebbe, 1982 Lebanon War, First Intifada, Persian Gulf War, Second Intifada, 2006 Lebanon War and Operation Orchid. The special forces most often come to the defense of any threats to their nation.
